GEORGETOWN GUYANA
In the Georgetown Harbour there are public and private
tidal berthage facilities with warehouse accommodation. Depths alongside range from 4.99m
to 6.10m (16 to 20 feet) at mean low water springs.
All of the wharves are served by road.
HARBOUR OF GEORGETOWN:
"Harbour of Georgetown" means the Harbour of Port Georgetown, the limits of
which are:
Seawards, bounded by the arc of a circle with radius one
nautical mile and centre the Georgetown Lighthouse; southwards, bounded by a line drawn
across the Demerara River from the southern boundary of Plantation La Penitence on the
East Bank to the southern boundary of Plantation Kilen Pouderoyen, on the West Bank of the
river; East and West, bounded by the land up to mean high water mark at spring tides.
TIDE AND DEPTH INFORMATION
The predictions are for the ships' channel on
the Demerara Bar at High and Low Tides. The heights are given above Chart Datum (C.D.)
which is 45.14 G.D. Owing to the changing depths In the ships' channel across the Demerara
Bar, the Harbour Master and/or Pilot will advise the minimum depth for the period. As a
guideline to Masters, etc., the depth of 6.21m (20.4 feet) is given on the understanding
it my vary +O.Slm (+2 feet) or more.
PILOTAGE
The Transport & Harbours Department is the Pilotage
Authority within the limits of jurisdiction. The pilots are stationed at Georgetown, and
two (2) pilot launches are maintained. Pilotage is compulsory for vessels entering and
leaving the Harbour of Georgetown.
WEATHER
Prevailing Winds - North easterly.
COMMUNICATION
All ships are requested to amend their estimated time of
arrival, as required, by special message through the Wireless Station to their Agents and
to the Harbour Authority. Vessels in the vicinity of Demerara Pilot Station should listen
for the Georgetown Lighthouse on V.H.F. channel 16 and SSB FRQ 8281.2.

WORKING HOURS
Work usually in following shifts: 07:00-15:00, overtime
16:00 - 23:00.
23:00 - 03:00, 03:00-07:00 are considered rest periods but labour will work to enable a
vessel to catch a tide; double time and time and a half is paid.
SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS:
Same shifts worked but overtime rates apply throughout. 23:00 - 03:00, 03:00-07:00
workable at three times basic wages to enable a vessel to catch a tide.
SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS : Waterfront workers
will work at overtime rates but no work New Year's Day, Republic Day, Good Friday, Labour
Day and Christmas Day.
